The Crow Wing County Bomb Squad is a joint effort between the Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office and the Brainerd Police Department. The Crow Wing County Bomb Squad was formed in 1978 and is currently 1 of 4 Bomb Squads in the state of Minnesota. There are 442 Bomb Squads nation-wide and 2,307 active personnel trained. In 2014 the Bomb Squad had 41 incidents in the area of coverage responsibility and 2 dignitary standbys (Vice President Joe Biden and Speaker of the House John Boehner).
The Crow Wing County Bomb Squad has a jurisdiction that covers the northern half of Minnesota. There are currently 5 members on the bomb squad who are all hazardous device certified through completing a six week F.B.I. Hazardous Device School. Members of the bomb squad are also trained in advanced demolition breaching and Hazmat technician response. The bomb squad works closely with the Crow Wing County Tactical Response Team and the Crisis Negotiation team. The operation of the bomb squad is largely funded through federal grants.
